Backpacking Europe at 16. How to convince mom it’s a good idea?

Jamie Y asked:

I will be 16 years old next summer and was thinking about backpacking Europe with my friend (who will be 18). I am mature and everything and look older than my age, but my mom thinks I’m too young. I’ve already been to Europe many times and speak 3 languages fluently. I’m sure I want to go but I’m not sure how to convice my mom. Suggestions

Draw up a contract with her of things you promise you won’t do, such as drink/smoke, etc. Tell her you’ll rent a cell phone in case there are any emergencies…

And demonstrate the hell out of you maturity to her this year so she’ll be confident that you’re ready to make this trip.

I hope your mom says NO. You are far too young…

I understand your mom but I don’t agree with her.
The world has always been a dangerous place and always will
be. I assume her worries are primarily because of the terrorist attacks. When I was travelling abroad alone (not like you, with a group) as a young girl, my mother also worried a lot – mostly about me being alone in the big world, but still she let me go. I never had a bad experience to the level that it would outweigh the good side of my trips.

Try asking her to put down on paper what it is that really worries her. Backpacking is a great thing; even with all the worries about safety. But if she worries about things nobody can control, then it’s very unlikely you’ll convince her. In that case, come forward with the argument that accidents happen everywhere, even at home. Travelling abroad will not prevent them, but it will certainly change your life for the better:)
