My best friend and I are ‘backpacking’ across Europe this summer. We want to take minimal luggage( only one of those bigger hiking packs each) and are unsure as to what to pack. We will be there for about 4 weeks. I’ve never been out of the country and he doesn’t had much experience so what are some of the “musts” for when traveling around Europe? What has worked best for saving space for you? What should we NOT bring? What should we plan on buying rather than packing?

Since you’ll be there for 4 weeks, don’t bother bringing toiletries. You can buy them when you land. No hair dryer/curling iron. Shave all your hair off and wear a bandana. As for clothing, bring stuff that can be hand-washed. A sweater is a good idea. Good shoes/sneakers for walking and maybe sandals for beach or if you’re staying at a hostel, wear them in the shower. Most EU hostel showers are nasty. Don’t forget to stop in Amsterdam for a puff and a pint.
